There was a time when you had to be in an office or actual workplace if you wanted to make a living. Now? You can work from home, a coffee shop, or even the beach if you’re feeling adventurous with entry-level work-from-home jobs.
Some choose to work at home full time, while others use work-from-home jobs as a source of additional income. No matter your reason, there are a number of entry-level work-from-home jobs that are suitable for a variety of skill sets. To make your search easier, we’ve broken down eight work from home jobs into two categories that target different skills: general work-from-home jobs, and those focused on reading and writing.
GENERAL ENTRY-LEVEL WORK-FROM-HOME JOBS
Are you a jack-of-all-trades? Or are you unsure about your career path? The following jobs are all worthwhile entry-level work-from-home jobs that require little prior experience. If you’re interested in working from home and don’t want to specialize too much, these are the gigs for you.
Do you enjoy clerical work and being the ultimate in support? Virtual assistant jobs are calling you.
These jobs involve being a digital assistant for one or more people. You’ll generally need some decent typing skills, but more importantly, you must have a love for scheduling, organizing, and all things details. You’ll also want some great communication skills, as people will be counting on you to keep them in the loop.
If you’re interested, make sure you have a quiet place to work during the day, as you’ll want to be distraction-free during calls. Then, start hunting for virtual assistant gigs at companies. Or, go with a larger assistant firm, like Fancy Hands.
DATA ENTRY JOBS
If you have quick typing skills and the patience to do repetitive work, you could be the perfect fit for data entry.
As a data entry specialist, you’ll be tasked with entering in tons of data for one or more companies depending on whether you go in-house or through an agency. Data entry can also be a great entry-level work-from-home position to get you in the door at a company you’re interested in pursuing further.
CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE
Do you have a passion for helping others, but want to work at home? A home customer service position could be perfect for you.
These positions largely function like a call center job, only they have the huge perk of allowing you to work from home. Often, these positions will require some equipment, but most companies will provide it. Beyond this, there’s usually some on-the-job training, but little pre-existing knowledge or skills are required.
Customer service representative jobs can be fairly competitive, so if you’re interested, hop on a job board like FlexJobs and start sending out applications now.
FlexJobs does have a monthly fee of $14.99, but it’s a great way to sift through all the noise and find jobs worth pursuing. I’ve worked out a special discount with FlexJobs, exclusive to readers of my site. Use the promo code “WEALTH” on FlexJobs when signing up to receive 30% off your membership.
The world of online tutoring is bustling and ready for anyone with a passion for teaching. And you can get into online tutoring even if you don’t have formal teaching experience.
There are a number of companies that provide online English tutoring for people in other countries, while others allow you to choose a specialty area and tutor only on your chosen topic. Either way, as far as rewarding online jobs go, online tutoring is hard to beat.

READING AND WRITING JOBS
Writing isn’t for everyone, but those who love it will find a wealth of freelance opportunities. There are countless writing jobs and professions available online, many of which require little prior knowledge — perfect for those just launching their career.
If you’re comfortable doing research and tackling just about any topic that comes your way, the world of freelance writing could be the perfect fit.
Freelance writing requires adaptive, crisp thinking, as you’ll have to quickly learn topics and write about them on the fly. You’ll also need solid writing chops, which can be acquired through practice and some homework (if you’re up for it).
There are a number of places you can go to find work. Freelance writing can land you a permanent spot with a company, or it can see you covering a number of topics as a freelancer for a site like Textbroker or as an independent contractor.
If you’re still unsure, I highly recommend taking a few minutes to read about all the opportunities that are available (and how to actually get those jobs) in my beginner’s guide to freelance writing.
Grab your sense of adventure if you’re planning on embarking on this path!
Are you less of a writer and more of a reader? Proofreading jobs are aplenty, and they’re a great way to make a living from home. What’s more, you can easily freelance by finding entry-level proofreading jobs until you’ve got the experience you need to secure a full-time proofreader spot at a larger company.
If you’re interested in proofreading but don’t have a lot of experience, check out Caitlin Pyle’s free proofreading webinar. As the creator of Proofread Anywhere, she’s the undisputed master of proofreading and a legit teacher.
Anyone with an idea can get started as a professional blogger. WordPress and other platforms are increasingly easy to use, and you can find dirt-cheap web hosting.
If you have a fun idea or are really passionate about a certain topic, start a blog and get to writing. While you won’t make a lot of money overnight, or even in the first several months, you can get a great foundation down and set yourself up for future success.
What I especially like about blogging is it’s an environment where you’ll be learning new things constantly. Depending on your blog niche, on any given day you may be creating graphics, taking photos, managing social media, writing, formatting blog posts, and much more. Being able to handle multiple skills like this for an employer is how you get yourself from entry-level to highly paid work.
If you’re interested in blogging, you can get started for less than $3 per month with a free domain name to boot. Save more than 50% by using my link here.
Do you like writing? Do you have a knack for writing while you listen? Transcription could be just the thing.
Transcription jobs are highly competitive and often involve transcribing medical procedures while listening to the recording of said procedure. As far as entry-level work-from-home jobs, this is a tricky one, as many transcription jobs require some certifications. Still, it’s feasible to find a job that doesn’t require any transcription certifications. If not, classes are generally affordable and fairly quick, so you can get your transcription career started soon.
TIPS ON WORKING FROM HOME
Working from home can be a real blessing for those wanting to get out of the office, be with their family more, or launch their own career. Still, making the remote life work for you takes some preparation and discipline. To ensure you find success in whatever remote role you pick, here are some tips to get you started on the right foot.
- Create your own schedule and stick to it: You may not be in an office, but it’s a great idea to make a schedule and stick to it as often as possible. Some flex time can be great for running errands or enjoying family time, but having a fairly regimented schedule or routine can ensure you treat your work from home as actual work.
- Avoid social media: It’s easy to get sucked into social media when you’re working from home. This is doubly true when you’re at your computer. Avoid distractions and only get on social media when you’re giving yourself some break time.
- Savor the unique work experience: Whether you’re working full-time or just earning extra cash, you’re in a wonderfully unique position. Enjoy your remote status, allow yourself to enjoy the freedom to work from unique spots from time to time, and embrace all that work-from-home positions have to offer.
