Investment tracking apps offer more than a consolidated view of your investments. The best ones provide advanced-level insights and feedback into your existing strategy, helping you make better decisions.

Over the years, I’ve spent significant time testing various free and paid investment tracking apps. These are the ones I’ve found to be most worthwhile.

  • Empower (formerly Personal Capital)
    • Best for: Comprehensive retirement planning and free portfolio analysis.

    • Cost: $150 per year ($1 for 14-day trial).
  • Yahoo! Finance

Best Investment Tracking Apps

While there’s no single best app for everyone, here’s a curated list of the top choices for different types of investors.

#1. Empower

  • Platforms: iOS, Android and desktop.
  • Cost: Free tracking tools with optional wealth management services available.

Empower is an all-in-one financial app that helps you track your spending, gives you a complete view of your investments, and analyzes your current portfolio with actionable insights.

This is one of my favorite charts within Empower. It shows whether my portfolio is optimized for its given level of risk by comparing it to the efficient frontier. The efficient frontier (the black line) represents the best possible return for a given risk. My current asset allocation (marked by the blue X) and alternative allocation (marked by the green circle) are very close to this line, indicating efficiency.

Empower gets its data by syncing with your existing brokerage accounts. From there, you’ll get access to a suite of tools that includes:

  • Portfolio tracker that provides real-time monitoring of your portfolio’s performance across all your investment accounts, including your IRA, 401(k) and taxable accounts.
  • Investment checkup tool that lets you see how well your portfolio is performing compared to common benchmark portfolios. Plus, you can compare your portfolio’s allocation to the ideal target allocations designed for maximum returns with minimal risk (see above).
  • Retirement planner that shows whether your current portfolio balance and savings rate has you on track to retire at your targeted retirement age.

The more information you give Empower — such as your estimated retirement date, your expected retirement expenses and income, and your expected Social Security income — the better and more customized data you’ll get from the software.

The app and tools are completely free. However, they serve as a lead magnet for Empower, one of the largest employer retirement plan providers in the U.S., with over $200 billion in assets under management. Empower also offers one-on-one wealth management services for a percentage fee.

#2. Kubera

  • Platforms: Web-based (desktop and mobile).
  • Cost: $150 per year ($1 for a 14-day trial).

Kubera is a premium personal wealth tracker designed for complex portfolios. It’s ideal for high-net-worth investors for whom much of their net worth is held outside traditional brokerage accounts.

What you’re getting with Kubera is primarily a breakdown of your current net worth, your investable cash position, and your assets categorized by class.

Key features include:

  • All-inclusive asset tracking, which integrates traditional investments, cryptocurrencies, private equity, and more into one single dashboard.
  • Dynamic scenario modeling, which projects long-term wealth under various investment outcomes.
  • Estate Planning with built-in beneficiary management.
  • Focus on privacy, with no data selling or ads.

Kubera has gained significant popularity among crypto investors for its ability to seamlessly integrate Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a wide range of other digital assets into a comprehensive net worth tracker, offering a unified view of one’s crypto portfolio alongside traditional investments.

#3. Yahoo! Finance

  • Platforms: iOS, Android and desktop.
  • Cost: Free, with an optional paid upgrade.

Yahoo! Finance is one of the most popular sites for stock news and real-time updates. Their mobile app provides short-term traders with a quick way to stay abreast of how they’re doing.

But many investors don’t know they can link their Yahoo! accounts to their existing brokerage accounts to get real-time updates, alerts, and balances on their portfolios.

The optional premium upgrade — which currently starts at $25 per month — provides advanced portfolio analysis tools that are most useful for technical traders who want to chart price movements.

Yahoo! doesn’t offer many bells and whistles on the free side, but it can be useful for tracking a handful of stocks, bonds, and ETFs you’re investing in, all in a single place.

#4. Sharesight

  • Platforms: Web-based (desktop and mobile).
  • Cost: Free plan and paid plans from $16 to $43 per month (billed annually).

Sharesight is ideal for investors needing comprehensive performance tracking and tax reporting in domestic and global markets.

Key features include:

  • Real-time portfolio monitoring that tracks performance, including dividends and currency fluctuations across global banks and markets.
  • Dividend tracking that automatically records dividend income, handles DRIPs, and projects future income.
  • Advanced reporting for capital gains, Foreign Investment Fund (FIF) and more.
  • Diversification analysis that provides insights into asset allocation across currencies, markets and sectors.
  • Benchmarking that compares investment performance against various market indexes.

Sharesight offers a free tier for up to 10 holdings, while paid plans start at $16 per month.

#5. Morningstar Investor

  • Platforms: Web-based (desktop and mobile).
  • Cost: $249 per year or $34.95 per month (7-day free trial).

Morningstar Investor combines top-tier investment research with solid portfolio management tools. It’s best for intermediate to advanced investors seeking professional-grade research on stocks and mutual funds who see portfolio management as an added benefit.

 Key features:

  • Analyst insights (access to Morningstar’s independent research, ratings, and valuations).
  • Portfolio x-ray that allows you to analyze your portfolio’s performance, allocation, fees, and hidden risks (such as sector concentration or stock overlap).
  • Tailored analysis that gives you personalized insights and news based on your holdings and watchlists.
  • Performance tracking that chart investment returns against chosen benchmarks and indexes.

While more expensive than basic trackers, Morningstar stands out in terms of access to research.

Other Portfolio Management Apps We Researched:

  • Fidelity Full View. While helpful for retirement analysis, it’s only available to Fidelity customers. It’s worth looking into if you qualify for a basic net worth and treatment planning tool.
  • Stock Rover. It’s a great research tool and stock screener, but an average portfolio tracker for the cost.
  • Delta. A newer app (no desktop version) that works with many assets, including cryptocurrencies. It is more popular among day traders than long-term investors.
  • SigFig. While mentioned in many other best-of lists, SigFig is not a true investment tracking app but a robo-advisor-like platform that charges a fee for managing your assets.
  • Quicken. A basic investment tracker for the high price, but could be useful if you use Quicken to manage all of your finances.

Final Thoughts on the Best Investment Tracking Apps

The right investment tracking app will help you make better financial decisions.

So, when considering how to track your investment portfolio, consider how it fits into your existing financial goals.

  • Is knowing your daily balance helpful for your short-term goals?
  • Do you need feedback about your current allocation?
  • Or are you just looking for a way to monitor your investments’ performance at any given time?

Wherever you land, there’s no shortage of financial apps that can help. Just remember: you want the app to help you achieve your financial goals, not something that will distract you from them.
